Setting Up a Referral Program

Welcome to the Referral Program Setup Guide! 🎉

Referral programs are a powerful way to turn your happy customers into brand advocates. With Nector, you can reward both referrers and their friends — boosting engagement, word-of-mouth marketing, and overall loyalty.

This guide walks you through configuring earning rules, setting reward types, and customizing how the program appears on your storefront.

Step 1 - Access Earning Rules

The Earning Rules section defines how customers earn rewards for referring others.

How to do it:

  • From your Nector Dashboard, go to the Programs section.
  • Access Earning Rules to see how the referral program is structured and displayed on your site.Screenshot

Step 2 - Locate the Referral Rule

Inside Earning Rules, find and click on the tag labeled Referral. This section houses all referral-based earning configurations.Screenshot

Step 3 - Review Preconfigured Rules

During onboarding, two preconfigured referral rules are automatically set up. You can review, modify, or delete these if you’d like to make adjustments.

Step 4 - Configure Referrer Rewards

Why it matters: This setting determines how your existing customers (referrers) are rewarded when they successfully refer someone.Screenshot

Step 5 - Choose the Referrer Reward Type

You can reward the referring customer with:

  • 🪙 Points (recommended — e.g., 100 points)
  • đź’¸ Flat discount
  • 📉 Percentage discount

Provide a clear title and description for customers, such as:

“Earn 100 coins when your friend makes their first purchase!”

The referring customer can be rewarded with points, a flat discount, or a percentage discount. It is recommended to use points, such as 100 points in this scenario. You can also provide a description and title that will be visible to the customer.

Step 6 - Skip Notification Settings for Now

Notification Settings will be covered separately under Communication Settings. You can safely skip this section at this stage.Screenshot

Step 7 - Define Referral Frequency and Limits

Setting limits ensures fair use and prevents exploitation.

How to do it: Go to Advanced Settings, and specify:

  • How many people a customer can refer
  • How frequently referrals can occur

Example: Allow up to 5 successful referrals per month.Screenshot

Step 8 - Finalize Referrer Reward Configuration

Once the rules are defined (e.g., 5 referrals per month), your referrer reward setup is complete.

Step 9 - Set Up Rewards for the Referred Friend

Now, configure what the referred customer receives when they join through a referral link. They can receive a flat discount or a percentage discount (not points).

Click Edit Discount Setting to modify the referred customer’s reward.

Example setup: 15% flat discount on their first purchase.

Step 10 - Customize the Referred Discount

Adjust the following as needed:

  • Discount percentage or amount
  • Minimum cart value (if required)
  • Product or category restrictions

Step 11 - Apply Product or Category Restrictions

To control reward applicability, click to restrict discounts to specific products or categories.

Step 12 - Save Discount Settings

After making all necessary changes, click Save. Then, move on to Advanced Settings for further customization.Screenshot

Step 13 - Configure Advanced Settings

In this section, you can:

  • Allow or disallow stacking with other rewards (e.g., sign-up bonuses).
  • Apply segment restrictions for targeted campaigns.

When you add a restriction, a Segment ID will be generated automatically.

Step 14 - Save and Return to Referral Overview

Once all configurations are done, click Save and return to the Referral screen to review your setup. Screenshot

Step 15 - Preview the Referral Experience

Let’s see how the referral program looks from the customer’s perspective. Log in to a dummy store or preview environment.

Step 16 - View the Referral Widget

Scroll through the widget on your storefront to view:

  • The referral section
  • The unique referral link generated for each customer

Step 17 - Test the Customer Journey

The customer can:

  1. Copy the referral link.
  2. Share it with friends via WhatsApp, email, or social media.
  3. When their friend clicks the link, they’re redirected to a landing page where they can copy their discount code.

đź’ˇ Tip: Encourage referrers to share links directly through messaging apps for higher conversion.

Once the referred friend completes their first purchase, both customers receive their rewards — completing the referral loop!

The customer can copy this referral link and share it with friends via WhatsApp or other platforms. Upon clicking the link, the referred individual will be redirected to a page where they can copy the code and access their discounts. This concludes the referral setup process. Thank you.
